The day that Camelot died…

Friday, 22nd November 1963: A few moments of the live CBS coverage of Dallas, Texas w/ Walter Cronkite:

After nearly an hour of chaos, confusion and conjecture, CBS News’ Walter Cronkite made the ‘official’ announcement of John F. Kennedy’s death. Though obviously shaken, Walter maintained his professional demeanor throughout.

All the hopes and dreams of the ‘New Frontier’ seemed to die with the President on that pleasant day in Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald, JFK’s assassin, was himself shot and killed the next day by wannabe mobster Jack Ruby. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was laid to rest at Arlington that following Monday. It was OVER.

Although Kennedy was widely liked and admired, Texas (then as now) was a hotbed of far Right Wing reactionary sentiment. So security had their eyes peeled for problems. To no avail…
