Memorial Day 2014…

Memorial Day marks the traditional beginning of Summer in America. Out comes the grill and the brewskis. You can wear white until Labor Day. Maybe take in a ball game. Only Independence Day conjures more rustic Americana…

But we should give a care for those who gave ‘the last full measure of their devotion’ to fend off those who would take what we have. We pay respect to those Americans who aren’t able to share the barbeque with us today.

Since Vietnam, our wars have only become more ‘convenient’ to the monied war profiteers, the ‘Military Industrial Complex’ who provide the firepower as well as to cheer from the safety of plush teak and brass appointed sidelines… and as the current dust-up at the VA not to mention the current heated political atmosphere shows, America’s priorities have gotten a bit out of whack (like it or not, THAT’S very American too)…

We need to work on that. Anyway, Happy Memorial Day!

The Galaxy Being…

“The Outer Limits”: Season 1 Episode 1 – first aired 16 September 1963

“There are powers in this universe beyond anything you know. … There is much you have to learn. … Go to your homes. Go and give thought to the mysteries of the universe. I will leave you now, in peace.”

and the World goes ka-BOOM…

This FRIGHTENING video is much overstated IMHO. Nonetheless, many legitimate points are raised. Meanwhile, GE airs adverts about how its locomotives are ‘friends’ with the trees (‘friendly’ CO2 releases?). The sad truth is that there IS no such thing as a ‘safe’ nuclear power plant:

â–º Risk assessment is purposely skewed to the overly optimistic side of the ledger.
â–º ‘Unforeseen’ events are given insufficient analysis and weight.
â–º Undereducated/undertrained reactor operators and technicians are incapable of reacting properly to even minor nuclear emergencies.
â–º Except in extreme cases, risks due to radiation exposure can only be assessed statistically.

While everything is working ‘to spec’ in a nuclear fission reactor, they are sources of (relatively) clean, (relatively) safe and (relatively) cheap energy. But when things go wrong, they can go very, VERY wrong indeed. We’ve seen this from Idaho’s oft-forgotten ‘SL-1’ to 3-Mile-Island to Chernobyl and now to Fukushima. In every case, operator error either caused the accident or exacerbated its effects. We have an unacceptable track record with nuke power plants. It only takes ONE Core Meltdown to ruin your WHOLE DAY.

Corporate and Government subsidies, obfuscation and outright LIES point back DIRECTLY to the 1%.
